Mac Hypercard Software Download

These are programs for the unique and popular Macintosh HyperCard platform from the 1980's and 1990's, which Apple foolishly discontinued. (Download HyperCard 1.2 or HyperCard 2.1 here if needed.) They are free and usable by all ages. Emulation technology has made it easy to run them again on today's Macs and even Windows PCs!

For Mac download the BasiliskII-bundled emulator MacOS9 or System761. For Windows download MacOS9 on this page. Once you've installed and started the emulator, drop the archive file onto the emulator's .app or .exe file. This automatically copies it to the desktop of the emulated computer. Now in the emulation double-click the archive (or you may have to open Mac68K HD > utilities, and use MacZip or Stuffit Expander to expand the archive). Then start HyperCard and open the desired HyperCard stack.

Downloads Download either the HyperStudio 5 Update or one of the players below to play stacks created with HyperStudio 5 and old stacks made with HyperStudio versions 3.0 to 4.5. Old Mac HyperCard Applications. 8 Ball is a HyperCard stack that lets you type a yes/no question and outputs the 8 ball type answer in a B&W ball. The dither routine was implemented as an option in Apple's long-gone HyperScan software (A HyperCard stack with some XCMDs/XFCNs) that would connect an early Mac to a flatbed scanner.

Old Mac HyperCard Games. Caper in the Castro is the first known LGBT video game. The player assumes the role of a lesbian detective investigating the disappearance of a transgender woman in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco. The original version of this program was written in 1991 in HyperCard on the Mac. PreLogo is a HyperCard 2.0 (or later) stack to introduce children to procedural programming languages. The child's program is entered by pressing icons in the desired sequence, and is likewise displayed as a sequence of icons, so reading skills are not required. The language consists of 4 instructions to move a (Logo-like) turtle. A text option is available to show and edit programs using textual commands. I'm not an expert, but I'd say the program is suitable for kids age 4-8.

Inkbook is a HyperCard 2.0 (or later) coloring book. Several outline drawings are available for children to color using HyperCard's drawing tools (particularly the paint bucket). A 'blank page' button erases all changes. Inkbook includes instructions for adding your own drawings. The program is fairly bulletproof, and suitable for kids over age 2. My 3 year old loves it, though if you add new pictures I'm sure he'd love a copy!

Animals+Sound is a HyperCard 2.0 (or later) stack for introducing young children (as young as 1 yr old!) to the Mac. It is pretty much bulletproof, and offers options to hide the desktop (to prevent accidental application switching under System 7). It is basically a point-and-click collection of animal art and sounds. It also has a 'Small Kids Mode' which lets very young kids navigate through by simply clicking (without pointing). I hope your kids like it! The latest versions fixes an incompatibility with later versions of Hypercard/HyperCard Player.

Bookbinder is for creating electronic textbooks, and includes clickable Table of Contents and Index, footnotes, bookmarks, etc. HyperCard 1.2 or later.

Ernie the Bat. Sample Storybook-based adventure. HyperCard 1.2 or later.

Louie Toons lets kids and HyperCard novices create 'flipbook' animations, and includes an 'onionskin' feature to make this easier. HyperCard 1.2 or later.

Storybook lets kids and HyperCard novices create stories, like Amanda Goodenough's 'Inigo Gets Out'. You can also create presentations easily. HyperCard 1.2 or later.

Think C/C++ From Scratch is a Bookbinder-based HyperCard (2.0 or later) tutorial on object-oriented programming. It uses a subset of C++. Examples are compatible with Symantec Think C 5 (or later) and any C++ compiler. TCFS also serves as an on-line C reference.
